Astronaut Reveals Emotional Distress In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on female health science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the experience, including spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included leaders in different industries.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
